Museum and collection

Acquired by the state of Baden-Württemberg in 1987, it has formed the basis of the German Harmonica Museum since the museum opened in 1991.

The museum, with its focus on cultural history, continued to develop and took a major step forward in April 2016. Reopened at a new location in Building V of the historic Hohner complex, the German Harmonica Museum now presents itself as a modern, greatly expanded museum in an authentic setting.

On the very site where millions upon millions of harmonica instruments were once manufactured, visitors can now explore the fascinating history of the industry across more than 800 square metres.

Accessible and diverse

The fully accessible museum caters to a wide range of interests:

• A richly layered multimedia permanent exhibition with music and film stations and remarkable highlights, including the world’s largest playable button accordion.
• Exhibition texts in German and English.
• A dedicated children’s trail through the permanent exhibition, explored with an engaging puzzle game.
• A large open-storage display containing hundreds of additional instruments.
• A foyer and event area, regular special exhibitions, specialist musical events, the museum shop and mechanical music machines.
